K. Skrekas: Proposals in the EU for dealing with the energy crisis

The European Union should make use of the 1.2 billion additional rights of the Emissions Trading System Stabilization Reserve, which could bring in up to € 100 billion to deal with the energy crisis, which is having a serious impact on inflation and affecting The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, asked for households speaking at the informal Council of Energy Ministers, which ended today, Saturday in the city of Amiens, France.

Mr. Skrekas noted that the energy transition is not responsible for the crisis, as populist voices claim. He cited, for confirmation, the research results of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), which highlight the contribution of RES in the de-escalation of energy prices. According to the model of AUTh, the average price in the wholesale market of electricity, without the production of RES in December in our country would reach 315 euros / MWh, compared to 235 euros / MWh that was finally formed. At the same time, he presented the society support measures that the government has taken in the last five months. He stressed, however, that immediate action should be taken by setting up a European mechanism to support households and businesses, so as not to undermine the ambitious goals of the Green Agreement.

The Minister of Environment and Energy also spoke about the crucial role that natural gas will play in the coming years in the energy transition and the stability of the European energy system. He stressed that the Classification Regulation should be improved in order to recognize the critical role of natural gas in the transition to climate neutrality. He stressed that the recent proposals of the European Commission for the development of gas storage infrastructure by the Member States and the establishment of a joint gas supply mechanism, are moving in the right direction to strengthen Europe ‘s energy security.
