Kabul: The war with the Taliban is still raging

Afghanistan is in a very sensitive military situation, as “war is raging with the Taliban“, Said today the Minister of Defense of the country Bismillah Mohammadi, after the Taliban entered Kala-i-Naou, the capital of Badghis province in northwestern Afghanistan, the APE reports. The Taliban today launched their first offensive against the provincial capital since launching a multi-pronged campaign against Afghan forces in early May, sparked by the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. This is now almost complete.

A few hours after the U.S. military says it has completed “more than 90%” of its withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Taliban, who have occupied vast areas of rural areas since May and have reached several major cities, entered Kala-i-Naou this morning. “We have to admit it, war is raging and we are in a very sensitive military situation,” he said. “However, this is not the first time that Afghanistan is going through difficult times” and “I want to reassure you all, (saying that) our national forces (…) will use all their forces and resources to defend our homeland and our people “, he adds in his announcement.

“The Taliban are still in the city”

The governor of the province Badghis Hesamuddin Sams He assured in a video posted on Facebook that “all security forces are defending the city” and that “the enemy suffered losses and was defeated”, while exchanging fire can be heard behind him. He also confirmed in an audio message to AFP that the Taliban were withdrawing from Kala-i-Naou. In the meantime the Zia Gul Habibi, A provincial council member said this afternoon that the situation had stabilized as the city did not fall to the Taliban, “but the Taliban are still inside the city and planes and helicopters are hitting their positions” in the city.

“Everyone was terrified in the morning when they heard that the Taliban had entered the city (…). We quickly started hearing gunfire and explosions,” said a resident. Kala-i-Naou Aziz Tawakoli. “Now explosions can be heard from afar, while helicopters and planes fly over the city and hit sporadic parts of the city,” he added. The Taliban had also attempted to attack Kunduz, the provincial capital in the north, in June.. However, their entry into Qala-i-Naw will certainly deal a new blow to the morale – which has already been significantly weakened – by Afghan forces, according to analysts. The Taliban occupation of Qala-i-Naw would be “a strategic success, as it would have a psychological impact on Afghan forces who are losing ground quickly,” said Afghanistan researcher Nisank Motwani.
