Kaliningrad Commission: Lithuania implements EU-imposed measures on Russia

Lithuania is implementing the European Union’s restrictive measures, unanimously imposed on Moscow by the Council in recent months in response to Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, said Commission Chief Eric Mammer on the transfer of goods to Kaliningrad.

In particular, Mr Mammer tweeted that “this is not a ‘blockade’ of course. We have always said that the supply of basic goods in Kaliningrad remains unhindered.”

He also explained that these measures are being taken “because some EU sanctions against certain Russian exports (steel products, construction materials) are now in place (after short transitional periods). This means that Lithuania needs to apply additional controls to road and rail transports through EU territory “.

“Of course, these controls are focused, proportionate and effective. They will be based on intelligent risk management to avoid the avoidance of sanctions, while allowing free passage,” he added.

“We are in close contact with the Lithuanian authorities and will provide additional guidance as we move forward,” he concluded.
