Former United States Vice President Kamala Harris scolded Donald Trump in his first major speech since leaving office, accusing his former Rival to trigger the “greatest man-made economic crisis” of current history through his tariffs.
Harris spoke on Wednesday night (30) at Emerge Gala, in San Francisco, for the benefit of an organization that supports women interested in entering politics. She also warning that her conflicts with the courts were leading the country to a constitutional crisis.
The Democratic candidate for the presidency in 2024 marked the first 100 days of the second Trump government during her speech, saying that “instead of a government works to promote the highest ideals in America, we are witnessing the total abandonment of these ideals.”
“And what we are also seeing in the last 14 weeks is the Americans using their voices and showing their courage,” added Harris.
The former vice made a series of attacks on the government, blaming Trump for the economic turmoil caused by the tariffs he imposed on products imported from his main trading partners.
Harris called Trump’s fees “reckless” and said that “as I predicted,” they are “clearly inviting a recession.”
The Democrat said that these import taxes will “harm workers and families, increasing the cost of essential day-to-day items, will devastate their retirement accounts, to which people have spent their lives contributing, and will paralyze American companies, large and small, forcing them to dismiss employees.”
Trump stated that widespread tariffs aim to correct a commercial imbalance with other countries and restore jobs in the US manufacturing industry.
However, the government’s changes in policy have shook global markets and increased economic pressure on the US economy. Official data released on Wednesday showed that the economy contracted 0.3% in the first quarter.
Harris told Democrats that there is a method behind the hallucinating pace of implementing Trump government policies, calling the president “container” a much larger conservative project.
“Friends, please, don’t be fooled thinking that everything is chaos. I know it may seem like this, but understand, what we are witnessing is a high-speed event, where a vessel is being used for the rapid implementation of an agenda that took decades to elaborate,” said the former US Vice.
