Kamala Harris calls for party unity in call with Democrats

Kamala Harris, the vice president of the United States, spoke with elected officials last week, urging the Democratic Party to remain united, according to a Harris aide.

The calls come amid speculation about President Joe Biden’s future and her name being mentioned as a potential replacement should Biden decide to step away as the party’s nominee.

Harris’s team has been keeping a low profile on the fallout within the party, following guidance from senior officials to stay the course. But that hasn’t stopped some Democrats from putting her forward to lead the party’s ticket.

On Sunday (7), during a call led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries with ranking Democratic members of the House, it was widely acknowledged that the nominee should be Harris, as previously reported by CNN .

While Biden meets with world leaders in Washington, D.C., for the NATO summit this week, Harris is back on the campaign trail, with events scheduled in Las Vegas and Dallas.

Over the weekend, during a moderated conversation with Caroline Wanga, president and CEO of Essence Ventures, Harris did not mention the growing concerns about Biden’s candidacy. Instead, she outlined the risks of the upcoming election and a potential second Trump term.

“Being president is never easy. Joe Biden is a fighter”

On Tuesday (9), Kamala Harris admitted that the last few days for President Joe Biden are a reminder that being president “is never easy”, but continued to defend him amid calls for him to step aside after his poor performance in the June debate, telling a crowd in Nevada that “Joe Biden is a fighter”.

“We always knew this election would be tough. The last few days have been a reminder that running for president of the United States is never easy, but one thing we know about our President Joe Biden is that he is a fighter. He is a fighter, and he is the first to tell you that when you get knocked down, you get back up,” Harris said during a campaign event in Las Vegas.

“So we will continue to fight and we will continue to organize, and in November, we will win. We will win. We know what hard work is. We like hard work, hard work is good work,” he added.
