US Vice President Kamala Harris has called the shooting that killed four people at a Georgia school a “senseless tragedy.”
Speaking at a rally in New Hampshire on Wednesday (4), the Democratic presidential candidate said her heart goes out to the students and teachers at the school. She called for action to curb gun violence.
“It is simply outrageous that every day in our country, in the United States of America, parents have to send their children to school worrying about whether or not their child will come home alive,” Harris said.
“We have to stop this,” she said, adding that “it doesn’t have to be this way.”
She spoke about how she traveled to vocational schools and colleges last year, meeting young Americans. She said she asked groups of students if they had ever had to go through a shooting drill while they were in school.
“Every time the auditorium was packed and almost every hand went up,” she said.
Harris said children in school should not have to spend energy “worrying about a shooter breaking through the classroom door.”
“It doesn’t have to be this way,” she reiterated.
