As Swifties and the BeyHive dream of a world where Taylor Swift and Beyoncé come together to jointly endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate, one singer is already getting the party started.
British pop singer Charli XCX joined the virtual discussion, posting “kamala IS brat” on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday (21).
If you are one of the few who don’t understand what this means, you are not alone and this is a safe space. Welcome to “Introduction to Brathology”.
What is “brat”?
“Brat” is less a noun than a concept, although it is also a thing.
The title of Charli XCX’s sixth studio album, she imagines a “brat” (which can be translated as “brat”, “brat” or a “spoiled child/teenager”, in general) as someone who has a “pack of cigarettes, a Bic lighter and a white tank top with no bra”.

“You’re like that girl who’s a little bit messy, likes to party, and sometimes says some dumb things,” she explained in a video shared on TikTok.
“She feels like herself, but maybe she also has a bit of a meltdown. But she kind of has fun with it, she’s very honest, very direct. A little volatile. Like, she does stupid things. But she’s a brat. You’re a brat. That’s a brat,” she added.
Many theorize that it is the antithesis of the “clean” and “well-groomed” look so often displayed by social media influencers.
There’s even a “brat” color, a very specific shade of green that the internet has practically declared to be the color of summer.
The singer chose the color for her album and explained that it’s “a kind of idea of taking something really gross and turning it into something that people are going to look at a lot and think about and ask, you know, why is it green?”
Kamala’s Team Response
Harris’s group responded in a way that signaled to the internet that they understood the compliment and were embracing it.
Those who visit the official account of Kamala’s campaign on Xwhich has a link to its official website, are faced with a background photo in “brat” green and the vice president’s name in the same font displayed on Charli XCX’s album.
Who is Kamala Harris, favorite to replace Biden in the presidential race?
Generation Z Voters
If Kamala secures the nomination as the Democratic nominee, she will be working for every vote in the race against former President Donald Trump. Younger voters could prove pivotal to the outcome of the 2024 election.
David Hogg, a 24-year-old activist and co-founder of the March for Our Lives movement, which was created after a mass shooting while he was a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, shared Charli XCX’s post on Sunday.
“The amount this single tweet may have done for the youth vote is not insignificant,” Hogg wrote.

Generation Z not only grew up on the internet, but they also showed that they know how to use social media to organize and push for change.
Soon after President Biden endorsed Harris, the internet was flooded with photos and videos of memes of everything from Harris dancing to coconut trees.

This came about thanks to comments Harris made in May 2023 during a commissioner swearing-in ceremony in an initiative focused on expanding educational opportunities for the Hispanic community.
Harris spoke about “a difference between equality and equity” and personalized the speech with a family story.
“None of us live in just one silo. Everything is in context,” she said. “My mother used to — she would give us a hard time sometimes — and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree? [risos] You exist in the context of everything you live in and what came before you.’”
The internet responded with coconut memes that gained traction again on Sunday as a way to show support.

Harris’ campaign reciprocated the sentiment with a statement on the Harris HQ X account that reads: “Providing context.”
Some have complained that even if coconut memes are well-intentioned, they can also be perceived as racist.
