Kamala is expected to announce her vice presidential candidate next Monday (5), sources say

US Vice President Kamala Harris will announce her choice for vice presidential candidate on Monday (5) before embarking on a multi-state trip with her new running mate later in the week, two sources familiar with the planning said.

The decision of who will run against Harris has taken center stage since she became the front-runner for the Democratic ticket in the Nov. 5 election.

President Joe Biden ended his bid for the White House just over a week ago.

Harris’ campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The short list of candidates under consideration includes Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

On Monday (29), North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer indicated that they were out of the running for vice president.

Several US states have decided presidential elections in recent years, including Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

“There has been no confirmed date for Vice President Harris to announce her running mate,” a campaign spokesperson told Reuters.

Typically, campaigns start thinking about the vice presidential pick after the primary race ends in the spring.

Harris faces an Aug. 7 deadline set by the Democratic National Committee, but the decision is likely to come sooner, the sources said.

Eric Holder Jr., the former attorney general who led Barack Obama’s vice presidential vetting process in 2008, is vetting Harris’s picks through his law firm, Covington & Burling.

Candidates are informally auditioning for the position, taking to the airwaves and campaign stops to showcase what they would bring to Harris’s ticket.

Shapiro, for example, gave a glowing review of Harris in the Philadelphia suburbs on Monday (29).
