“When I am elected president, I will represent all Americans, including those who do not vote for me,” the vice president told reporters before departing for a campaign event in North Carolina, one of seven swing states that will determine the result of the November 5th election.
His Republican rival, Donald Trump, will also hold a rally there this Wednesday (30).
Harris spent the final week of the campaign telling voters she will respect those who disagree with her and reinforcing that former President Trump is a threat to democracy.
This promise — made at a large rally in front of the White House on Tuesday night (29) — was overshadowed by Biden, who criticized racist comments made at a Trump rally last Sunday (27).
According to a White House transcript, Biden said that “the only trash I see floating around is from his supporters — the demonization of Latinos is inconceivable.” The Trump campaign claimed Biden was referring to Trump supporters as “trash,” while Biden later said he was talking about language used by a comedian at the rally.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll on Tuesday showed Harris leading Trump 44% to 43% among registered voters nationally, within the margin of error. Other polls show tight margins in the seven swing states. Damage from last month’s hurricane made North Carolina’s outcome especially difficult to predict.
On Wednesday (30), Harris will be in the capital in Raleigh, North Carolina, while Trump will hold a rally in Rocky Mount.
Trump won North Carolina by less than 1.5 percentage points in 2020. The last Democrat to win the state was Barack Obama in 2008, although it has had a Democratic governor, Roy Cooper, since 2017.
Trump currently leads Harris by just one percentage point in the state, according to a FiveThirtyEight polling average.
Trump and his allies have tried to portray voting by non-citizens as a potential risk to the election, although private and state reviews have repeatedly shown that the illegal practice is very rare. The campaign to focus on this issue also won a victory this Wednesday (30), when the US Supreme Court reinstated Virginia’s decision to exclude from its voter rolls 1,600 people who state authorities concluded may not be citizens, a a claim that the Biden administration has disputed.
At stake on November 5th is who will govern the richest and most powerful country in the world. Harris and Trump differ on support for Ukraine and NATO, abortion rights, taxes, basic democratic principles and tariffs that could trigger trade wars.
Long wait for results?
North Carolina residents, especially in the hard-hit rural western region, are still trying to rebuild their lives after the devastating damage caused by last month’s hurricane. The Republican-leaning area accounted for about 9% of the vote in 2020, according to an analysis by Republican pollster Patrick Ruffini.
While some state officials — including some Republicans — praised federal cleanup efforts, Trump falsely claimed that disaster aid intended for the state was diverted to help immigrants.
Republican Representative Andy Harris said last week that the state legislature should preemptively declare that Trump won the state’s 16 Electoral College votes to avoid “disenchanted voters.”
Roy Cooper, the governor of North Carolina, ruled out that possibility.
The outcome in North Carolina could remain uncertain for a week or more after the election.
Early votes that arrive on Election Day, as well as votes from overseas and military voters, can be counted for up to 10 days after that.
In 2020, media outlets did not announce the result in North Carolina for Trump until November 13, 10 days after the election.
More than a third of North Carolina’s registered voters have already voted in the 2024 election, according to the state elections commission.
Later on Wednesday (30), Harris will travel to Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, two other swing states. His rally in Madison, Wisconsin, will feature performances by musicians including the band Mumford & Sons. Trump will also be in Wisconsin for a rally with former NFL quarterback Brett Favre.
