According to some sources CNN Kamala Harris’ campaign does not plan to approach the alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump last Sunday (15) in a political way, and any future comments from the vice president on the events should reflect her statement released by the White House on Sunday night.
“This is not a political moment,” a campaign adviser told CNN . In the campaign’s view, they added, “it doesn’t mean anything politically” — and certainly not a moment it sees as a potential alternative trajectory for the election race.
Both President Joe Biden and Harris have been briefed on the incident in West Palm Beach, and both were quick to condemn all types of political violence and express relief that the former president was not harmed. Harris said in an official White House statement that she was “deeply disturbed” by the apparent assassination attempt.
“As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We must all do our part to ensure this incident does not lead to further violence,” Harris said. “I am grateful that former President Trump is safe.”
Harris is scheduled to attend a meeting with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters at the union’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Monday (16). She will also spend part of the day preparing for an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists on Tuesday (17).
