Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said the United States needs to continue to have a presence in the Middle East and said he supports continuing to stand with Israel against Iranian-backed groups.
“The expansion of Israel and its proxies is an absolute fundamental necessity if the United States is to have firm leadership there,” Walz said, presumably misspelling Israel rather than Iran.
Walz was asked if he were the final voice in the White House Crisis Room whether he would support a preemptive strike by Israel on Iran. The governor did not directly answer the question.
Tim Walz and JD Vance, candidates for Vice President of the United States on the Kamala Harris and Donald Trump ticket, respectively, debate for the first time this Tuesday (1st). The event is carried out by CBS News and takes place five weeks before American election day.
Walz and Vance greeted each other before the debate began, already on stage.
Conflict in the Middle East
This Tuesday (1st), Iran launched a missile attack against Israel, increasing fears of a widespread war in the Middle East. The situation in the region was the first topic of debate.
Walz began the debate by recalling the Hamas attack against Israel, highlighting that the possibility of Israel defending itself is fundamental. He also highlighted that firm leadership will be important.
He then began attacking Donald Trump, pointing out that Trump’s former allies said he shouldn’t be “anywhere near the White House.” Thus, he highlighted that Kamala Harris will have a firm leadership.
Vance, in turn, before answering the question whether he would support a preventive attack by Israel, introduced himself to the voter, briefly telling his story.
He defended Donald Trump from Walz’s attacks and criticized the administration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
On the preemptive strike question, the Republican commented that it is up to Israel to decide what they need to do to keep the country safe and that the US must support its allies as they fight the “bad guys”.
Then, Tim Walz stated that Iran is closer to a nuclear weapon because of the Trump administration, adding that the Republican’s “standard” diplomacy is to publish on social media.
JD Vance countered, saying Trump has “consistently made the world safer.”
