“This is a historic moment and I do not miss it,” Jean-Pierre said after announcing her appointment. “It’s a very emotional day.”

She said she was still “working out” the significance of her appointment, calling it “an honor and a privilege to be behind this step”.
Mr Biden has pledged to appoint top officials, cabinet members and judges to reflect America’s diversity, where whites make up less than 60 percent of the population but traditionally hold most top government positions.
Jean Pierre’s experience and past

Jean-Pierre is Biden’s main deputy press secretary since the day he was sworn in in January 2021.
At times, he even stepped into the newsroom instead of outgoing press secretary Jen Psaki, and more often than not “chatted” with off-camera reporters when Biden traveled on Air Force One.

Prior to joining Biden’s presidential campaign, Jean-Pierre was the head of public relations for the progressive group MoveOn.org and a former political analyst for NBC and MSNBC.
He also worked on political affairs in the Obama White House and his re-election campaign. “Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity required for this difficult position, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating government work on behalf of the American people,” Biden said in a statement.
Why is the current spokesperson leaving?

Ms. Psaki is due to leave her post on May 13. She took over as the president’s first women-only communications team when Mr Biden took office.
When she started working, Ms. Psaki, who has two young children, said she aimed to stay in her role for about a year.
He is expected to take on a role on MSNBC later this year. Psaki praised Jean-Pierre as a “partner in the truth”, noting the importance of the historic appointment.
“Representation is important and it is going to give a voice to so many and show so many what is really possible when you work hard and dream big things,” he said.
What challenges does Karin Jean-Pierre face?

Jean-Pierre takes on the role as the White House faces a tough battle to help Democrats retain the House and Senate in the November midterm elections and as the government struggles to address American concerns about rising inflation and state of the economy.
It is also taking its place as Mr Biden faces a frightening set of foreign policy challenges, including the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and North Korea’s escalating nuclear test program.
