Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, dazzled Friday night at the 2022 Earthshot Awards, showing off her sustainable style in a rented gown that she accessorized with an emerald choker once worn by Princess Diana.
The Art Deco-style piece was a favorite of the former Princess of Wales, who daringly wore it on her forehead as a tiara during a 1985 tour of Australia with her then-husband King Charles III. The jewel had been loaned to Diana by Queen Elizabeth II.
The Princess of Wales decided to end the three-day royal trip to the United States by combining the choker with a vibrant green off-the-shoulder dress from Solace London, rented for £74 (R$ 475) on the online platform HURR.
Prince William founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020 in hopes of harnessing the world’s smartest minds to tackle some of humanity’s most pressing environmental challenges. Every year for the next decade, five winners will receive £1 million (R$6.4 million) to fund their creative solutions.
The event organized this year in Boston was one of the highlights of the calendar of the Prince of Wales. Speaking at the ceremony, William said: “I think the Earthshot solutions you’ve seen tonight show that we can overcome our planet’s biggest challenges. And by supporting them and helping them grow, we can change our future.”
“Along with the winners and finalists, and those to come in the years to come, I hope that Earthshot’s legacy will continue to grow, helping our communities and our planet thrive,” he continued.
Earthshot organizers considered sustainability in nearly every aspect of the night. In an attempt to make the occasion as eco-friendly as possible, all food served was plant-based and single-use plastic was banned. Guests were transported to the venue in electric or hybrid vehicles and emphasis was placed on sourcing local equipment suppliers.
As Catherine’s wardrobe choice, contestants were encouraged to dress in vintage ensembles or wear clothes they would wear again in the future.
Meanwhile, the recycled green carpet, which had already been used at the inaugural awards show in London last year, was adorned with plants grown within a 100-mile radius of the venue that would be donated to community organizations after the dazzling event.
Celebrities in attendance at the awards ceremony included Hollywood actor Rami Malek and former England football captain David Beckham, while performers for the night included Annie Lennox, Ellie Goulding and Beyoncé’s protégés Chloe x Halle.
In conversation with CNN Ahead of the event, Malek praised William for launching the awards and creating a positive approach to tackling the climate crisis.
“It is extraordinarily inspiring. He’s finding answers and the £1 million given to these five people, these five organisations, is something that keeps us from looking in the dark and being pessimistic and looking ahead of where we might be. When we put our ideas together, we can do extraordinary things,” said the 41-year-old “Bohemian Rhapsody” star, who later presented the Fix Our Climate award.
The awards ceremony ended a complex visit by the royal couple to Boston, overshadowed by racial controversy surrounding a woman identified as William’s godmother, Susan Hussey. British media reported her resignation as royal aide after she repeatedly questioned a prominent UK-born black charity leader about where she “really came from”.
