“Delighted to welcome @DwayneFields as the new Chief Scout UK,” wrote the Princess of Wales. “Scouts are an amazing organization that teaches life skills. and makes a huge difference to young people across the country.” And again: “I can’t wait to work with you!”. The post is signed with a “C” of Catherine, her full name.

The post is one of the few published by Kate Middleton in recent months: since she has been undergoing treatment for cancer, the princess has slowed down her work pace, and has not yet set a date for her return to institutional commitments.

On X, The Princess of Wales shared the Scouts video of Fields introducing himself in his new role and talked about the impact the Scout group had had on him since he started participating at the age of 7.

«Born in Jamaica, Dwayne came to the UK when he was 6 years old. “He grew up in north-east London, in Stoke Newington, with little contact with nature. Scouting gave Dwayne access to the outdoors, new friendships and opened up new horizons for him,” the group said in a statement. The statement explained that Scouting gave Fields, when he became a Cub, “skills, self-confidence and a place to belong. Through his determination and the support of his volunteer Scout leaders and friends, he set out on the path to becoming a the first black British person to reach the North Pole. She inspires people of all backgrounds to explore nature, support their communities, and be the best they can be.”

Princess Kate and her sister Pippa were Brownies as children (the section that groups girls from eight to twelve years old). During a visit to the Scout headquarters, in 2019, she declared that she would have liked her children to also become part of the group and its “very open and inclusive way of life”.
