The actress Kate Winslet 49, spoke about the experience of playing World War II photographer Lee Miller when starring in the film “Lee” (2023) and talked about the pressure to constantly look nice and tidy even while playing the role of a real person.
“People say, ‘Oh, you were so brave for that role. You didn’t wear makeup’. ‘You had wrinkles’”, said the actress in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “We tell men, ‘Oh, you were so brave for that role. Did you grow a beard’? No. We don’t say… It’s not courage, it’s acting the part.”
“It’s about knowing that Lee’s comfort with his body was hard won,” he said, adding that he finds it “exhausting” to worry about it all the time.
“There was a potential investor who said to me, ‘Why should I like this woman [Lee Miller]?’ I mean, she’s a drunk, she’s, you know, she’s kind of loud. He probably stopped short of saying she has wrinkles on her face,” Winslet said.
“It’s difficult to make films about historical female figures. You know, normally, these are not films that would necessarily do well at the box office,” he added.
