Katya Echazarreta, the Mexican astronaut, already has her own Barbie

The Mexican astronaut Katya Echazarreta already has her own Barbie. The news that Mattel created a doll of the first Mexican-born woman to reach space in 2022 via the New Shepard program’s NS-21 mission made our hearts flutter with pride.

The launch arrives on March 8, precisely, within the framework of International Women’s Day. The American toy company Mattel, Inc. decided to include the astronaut in its collection Role Modelsan initiative created since 2015, whose purpose is to pay tribute to inspiring women around the world.

In an interview for the newspaper Millennium, Katya shared what it means to her to have her own doll, which she seeks to put the spotlight on to empower and inspire thousands of girls.

In said interview, the 27-year-old from Guadalajara mentioned that her Barbie doll is unique, as it is inspired by “a real woman who exists, who is working and does it to create opportunities for all Mexican girls and boys.”

In addition to this, Katya revealed that her mother began to cry knowing that they would make a Barbie inspired by her. According to the engineer, this made her think about the importance of women who grew up in an environment where they were not allowed to dream or aspire to anything else.

With the Katya Echazarreta doll, the list of the collection is expanded Role Modelswhich includes women such as Celia Cruz, Frida Kahlo, Naomi Osaka, Lorena Ochoa, among other personalities who have excelled in different fields.
