The head of the European Union’s diplomacy Kaya Calas today acknowledged that it was not “very optimistic” about the possibility of “27” imposing sanctions on Israel, despite the devastating humanitarian situation on the Palestinian pocket of Gaza. “I am not very optimistic, and we are not going to make decisions today,” he told Copenhagen before a meeting of the “27” foreign ministers. “This sends the message that we are divided,” Callas said. The European Commission has proposed the suspension of European funding of Israeli start-up companies, but “even this measure”, although it has not been “forgiving” by the “27” because of their divisions, the Estonian leader underlined.
