Aid has arrived from Russia and its allies

At the same time, Russia and its allies in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) announced today the deployment of a first deployment of a “collective peacekeeping force” to Kazakhstan at the request of that country.

“A Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) peacekeeping force has been sent to Kazakhstan for a limited period to stabilize and normalize the situation.”, the military alliance said in a statement posted on the Telegram by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Russian paratroopers have been deployed in Kazakhstan as part of the peacekeeping force, which includes troops from four other former Soviet republics, the CSTO secretariat said in a statement.

The deployment comes in response to a request from Kazakhstan’s president to help stabilize the country, which has been rocked by a wave of protests sparked by rising fuel prices.

The secretariat noted that the main task of the peacekeeping force will be to protect important state and military installations and to provide assistance to the law enforcement forces of Kazakhstan.
