Kazakhstan: “Constitutional order is being restored,” Tokayev says after dozens of deaths

Its president Kazakhstan, Kasim-Yomart Tokayev, stressed today that the constitutional order has been restored for the most part in the country of Central Asia, where bloody riots have been raging for days.

The Kazakh Interior Ministry said 26 “armed criminals” were killed and more than 3,000 were arrested, while in the ranks of the security forces 18 policemen and members of the national guard lost their lives from the beginning of the protest mobilizations.

Mr. Tokayev will address the nation today, state television reported.

Explosion and shootings in Almaty

A explosion and gunfire were heard in Almaty, while military vehicles were seen heading towards the square.

“More than a thousand people have been injured since the riots in various parts of Kazakhstan, almost 400 of them are being treated and 62 are in intensive care.”, clarified the Deputy Minister of Health Ajar Giniat in statements made on the television network Khabar-24, which are referred to by the news agencies Interfax and TASS.

“Dozens” of protesters were killed by police overnight which passed during their attempt to invade administrative buildings in Almaty, the largest city and financial capital of Kazakhstan, had been announced earlier by the police.

“Last night, extremist forces attempted to invade administrative buildings, the police headquarters in the city of Almaty, as well as local services and police stations.”, said police spokesman Sultanat Azirbek, whose statements were quoted by Interfax-Kazakhstan, TASS and Ria Novosti news agencies.

“Dozens of attackers have been eliminated and their data is currently being verified”, he added.
