A self-proclaimed opposition leader in Kazakhstan today called on the West to intervene in the Central Asian republic, saying that otherwise Russia would subjugate the country to a kind of restored Soviet Union.
Protests erupting in response to rising fuel prices escalated this week into a large-scale movement against Nursultan Nazarbayev, the supreme leader of Kazakhstan since the Soviet era.
Kazakhstan’s President Kashim-Yomart Tokayev, chosen by Nazarbayev to succeed him, has called for an allied force from Russia, led by Moscow, known as the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
Mukhtar Amblyazov, a former banker and government minister who is the leader of an opposition movement called Kazakhstan’s Democratic Election, has said the West must go to war.
“If it does not, then Kazakhstan will become Belarus and (Russian President Vladimir Putin) Putin will methodically impose his program – the reconstruction of a structure like the Soviet Union,” Ablyazov told Reuters in Russian. the Paris.
“Kazakhstan is now in a geopolitical game,” he added. “Russia has already entered, it has sent an army. The CSTO is Russia. This is an occupation by Russia,” he added.
Amblyazov, who is wanted in his homeland for fraud and embezzlement, lives in France, where he has been granted refugee status. He denies all allegations against him in Russia and Kazakhstan, calling them politically motivated.
Ablyazov claimed to be the leader of the opposition protests, noting that protesters were advising him daily on field tactics in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and financial capital.
“I consider myself the leader of the opposition,” he said.
“Every day the protesters call me and ask: ‘What should we do? We are standing here: What should we do?'” He added.
He also said he was ready to fly to Kazakhstan to lead an interim government if protests escalated, and noted that his activists were waiting for him.
“The West must move Kazakhstan away from Russia,” he said. “The West must help prevent Putin from taking over this country. The West must help civil society elect its leaders so that the country can choose its path, a democratic path as in West”.
