Kazakhstan: Withdrawal of Russian troops has begun

In particular, this morning a ceremony was held in Almaty with the participation of the soldiers of the Organization of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) who participated in the operation, according to an AFP correspondent. “The peacekeeping operation has been completed (…) we have fulfilled our duties,” the Russian general said. Andrei Serdyukov, head of 2,030 soldiers CSTO from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, developed in Kazakhstan on January 6.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, these troops “began to prepare military and technical equipment to be loaded on Russian warplanes in view of their return to their permanent base.” As Tokayev stated and confirmed by the CSTO, the withdrawal of troops will be completed in 10 days.

Last week Kazakhstan was shaken by unprecedented mobilizations and riots, the worst since the country gained its independence in 1991, according to the APE-MPE. From the suppression of the mobilizations Dozens of people were killed and hundreds injured, while at least 12,000 were arrested.

Authorities in Kazakhstan have called the protests a “terrorist” attack, with President Tokayev “Coup attempt”. The protests erupted after the announcement of the increase in fuel prices, at a time when living standards in Kazakhstan are deteriorating amid endemic corruption.
