Keanu Reeves gets emotional talking about the impact of “The Matrix” after 25 years

There is no shortage of iconic films with which the actor Keanu Reeves blessed the world throughout his illustrious career, but the beloved science fiction classic “Matrix” really stands out from the rest.

During an appearance on the show The Late Show on Monday (22), presenter Stephen Colbert mentioned a selection of Reeves’ most popular films, along with their birthdays, remembering that “Matrix” completes 25 years this year . Colbert then asked Reeves to share his fondest memory from the film.

“‘The Matrix’ changed my life, and over the years it changed a lot of other people’s lives in really positive and great ways,” Reeves said, his voice shaking. “As an artist, you expect that when you make a movie or tell a story,” he added.

“And so when you say that in these years, the amount of people I’ve met who have been… touched by ‘The Matrix’ in such a positive way, that’s the best,” said the actor, who has appeared in four “Matrix” films in total, the most recent of which was 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections.”

Starring Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Carrie-Anne Moss, the first “Matrix” is a dystopian sci-fi epic that follows Neo (Reeves), a computer hacker who is drafted to join a cybernetic intelligence rebellion after discovering that humanity is trapped inside a simulated reality.

The film grossed over $467 million at the time and became one of the highest-grossing theatrical releases of the year. It won four Oscars and grossed just under $2 billion worldwide over its 25-year run.

Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, the film’s studio, announced in April that a fifth installment of the “Matrix” franchise is in the works, but it has not yet been confirmed whether Reeves will be a part of it — Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group is a subsidiary of CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
