The manga world has lost one of its own. Kentaro Miura, famous Japanese manga author known in particular for the saga Berserk, recently died at the age of 54, the manga magazine team announced on Thursday Young Animal, who has been publishing this medieval-fantastic work for over thirty years. Kentaro Miura “passed away on May 6, the victim of an aortic dissection,” this magazine from the Japanese publishing house Hakusensha announced on Twitter, offering his condolences and also expressing his “immense respect” and “gratitude. “.

Anchored in a universe called “dark fantasy”, with a dark and apocalyptic atmosphere, Berserk, first published in 1989, tells the story of Guts, a lone warrior hunted by dark forces who seeks revenge on his former master.

The volumes of the Berserk saga sold more than 50 million copies

Published by episodes in the magazine Young Animal, Berserk was also the subject of a manga distribution, of which the 40 volumes published to date have sold more than 50 million copies in fifteen countries, including France and the United States. This work, still in progress, had also been adapted into animated series, novels, animated films in cinema or even video games.

With its graphic violence and very detailed design, Berserk has strongly influenced other cultural productions, such as the Japanese video game series Souls (Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls…). Kentaro Miura was honored in 2002 for Berserk in the award of excellence category of the prestigious Japanese cultural award Osamu Tezuka.
