KEOSOE: Increase of wine imports in 2021

Wine imports in quantity and value from the European Union and Third Countries increase in 2021 compared to 2020, according to data from ELSTAT, which have been processed by the Sectoral National Agricultural Cooperative of Wine Products (KEOSOE).

According to the Union, this trend was formed due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, however, as he notes, the imports of wines are increased compared to 2019 in terms of value by 9.93%, while on the contrary in quantities they are reduced by 19, 53%.

In percentage terms, wine imports in 2021 correspond to 7.63% of the corresponding Greek wine production and wine exports in 2021 represent 11.34% respectively.

Overall, for 2021, there was an increase in the value of imports compared to 2020, by 84.85% (29,102,995 euros / 2020 – 53,795,614 euros / 2021), when imports in 2020 had decreased by 39.84% compared to 2019.

According to ELSTAT data, wine imports concern EU countries, which are increased by 83.19% in value (28,172,945 euros / 2020 – 51,610,129 euros / 2021), while an increase of 39 , 83% shows the comparison of sizes in value of 2021, with the average of the previous 5 years 2016 – 2020.

The average purchase price of wines from European Union countries per kilo, increased based on 2021 by 21.83% (2.37 euros / kilo / 2020 – 2.88 euros / kilo / 2021).

An increase of 134.99% is also recorded in wine imports from Third Countries in value (930,050 euros / 2020 – 2,185,485 euros / 2021) which is also reflected in the average of the last 5 years (82.56%), percentage changes influenced by the big drop of the respective sizes in 2020, due to the pandemic.

In terms of wine quantities, they also increased significantly in 2021 in terms of acquisitions from EU countries. by 50.37% (11,906 tons / 2020 – 17,903 tons / 2021) with a corresponding increase of 1.64% compared to 2021 with the average import of the previous 5 years.

The import volumes of wines from Third Countries also show an increase of 177.13% (341 tons / 2020 – 945 tons / 2021).

France, Italy and Spain are the “champions”

Most wine imports from European Union countries come from France, Italy and Spain.

Specifically, Italy is in the first place, in terms of wine shipments to our country, in quantity, as in 2021 compared to 2020 shipments increased by 17.73% (6,437,811 kg / 2020 – 7,579,267 kg / 2021) but a decrease of 31.95% is recorded in relation to the M.O. of the last 5 years. It should be noted that in 2019 much higher quantities of wine were sent (11,839,740 kg).

In value, the Italian shipments increased by 58.56% (10,712,392 euros / 2020 – 16,985,894 euros / 2021), while a corresponding increase of 22.04% is recorded by the comparison of 2021 with the M.O. 5 years, while the value of intra-Community acquisitions from Italy, returns to the levels of 2019 (16,678,226 euros).

Finally, equivalent to these changes is the increase in the average purchase price of wines from Italy by 34.68% (2.24 euros / kg / 2021 – 1.66 euros / kg / 2020), a price that is higher than the level of the previous 5 years, by 73.07%.

In the first place of imports of wines in value is France, which saw its shipments to our country increase in value in 2021 by 126.73% (10,693,459 euros / 2020 – 24,245,044 euros / 2021), while an increase is also recorded compared to the year before the pandemic, ie 2019 (20.51%).

An increase of 126.43% was recorded in the quantities of wines sent from France to Greece (863,033 kg / 2020 – 1,934,366 kg / 2021), quantities which compared to the 5-year average also increase by 49.16%.

The price per kilo fluctuated at the same levels as in 2020, with an increase of 0.12% (12.41 euros / kg / 2021 – 12.39 euros / kg / 2020).

An increase of 101.73% in quantity was recorded in the imports of Spanish wines in 2021 compared to 2020 (6,236,839 kg / 2021 – 3,091,723 kg / 2020), while the imports in terms of value also moved in positive territory, as they increased by 63.75% (4,969,454 euros / 2021 – 3,034,720 euros / 2020).

Finally, the average purchase price of Spanish wines fell to 0.80 euros / kg in 2021, recording a decrease of 18.82% in 2020 (0.98 euros / kg).
