A message that no one can deprive a child of his education, sent from the floor of Parliament, the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos, presenting the amendment which introduces imprisonment and fines, to parents and guardians of minors who fail to register or their supervision of attendance. The amendment was tabled jointly with the Minister of Justice Konstantinos Tsiaras, in the bill for the National School of Judges.
As Mrs. Kerameos noted, the amendment concerns parents who keep their children away from school, due to opposition to masks or self-diagnostic tests. The cases are individual, but one case is enough, the minister stressed.
Referring to the control of the spread of coronavirus in schools, the Minister of Education said that in the last two weeks, 1,000 fewer cases were recorded and that only 15 departments (out of a total of 85,000) are closed, ie 0.01%. Schools follow the pandemic, and do not lead it he said characteristically.
The withdrawal of the amendment was requested by the parliamentary representative of SYRIZA Theofilos Xanthopoulos. We must first discuss appropriate and proportionate measures for the phenomenon, and separate it from social causes related to school dropout, said Mr. Xanthopoulos.
The KKE parliamentary representative Thanasis Pafilis said that the measure is horizontal and that the amendment was tabled without dialogue. The MEPA25 parliamentary representative Angeliki Adamopoulou said that schools are health bombs, and that the government, instead of diluting the departments and opening new halls, is merging departments.
