The filmmaker Kevin Costner 69, admitted that the first part of “Horizon: An American Saga” did not have an “overwhelming success” during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, where he screened the second part of the production. He acts as director, screenwriter, producer and protagonist of the western.
“Sometimes when things don’t come to us easily, we just want to walk away. But there’s something in me that only increases my desire when something isn’t working,” he said.
“It’s a story, it’s a piece of entertainment that I think can stand the test of time. When I feel rejection, unlike anyone else, when I open my eyes from my disappointment, my desire only increases,” he continued.
The film was in competition for the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May and hit theaters in the United States in June. The film grossed just $29 million.
According to Deadline, part 1 and 2 of “Horizon” cost US$100 million (around R$557 million). In Cannes, the filmmaker spoke about the difficulty of raising money for the project, which was partially made with his own investment.
“I don’t know why it was so hard [encontrar financiamento]. I don’t know why it was so hard to get people to believe in the film I wanted to make. (…) I knocked on every boat in Cannes to help me. ‘Oh, come on, let’s make a film. Get out your checkbook, let’s talk about money,'” he said.
Costner wants to make a four-film saga and is trying to raise funds for the third and fourth films, he says. The next feature film is already being filmed.
The production is a Western set during the Civil War in the United States. In addition to being an actor and filmmaker, Sienna Miller , Abbey Lee Kershaw , Jamie Campbell , Ella Hunt and Sam Worthington are in the cast.
Kevin Costner leaves Yellowstone in season 5
In June, the actor announced his departure from “Yellowstone“ a successful series in the United States in which he starred.
“I wanted to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that need to be done, and thinking about Yellowstone, that series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I won’t be able to continue Season 5 or in the future,” he said in a statement.
