Kevin O Chris celebrates funk at Rock in Rio: “Kids are going to turn on the TV”

Kevin Chris celebrated the fact of being chosen to join the Rock in Rio line up on Brazil Day, which will bring together only national artists with different rhythms.

The funk artist from Rio takes to the Espaço Favela stage with the show Pra Semper Baile de Favela, alongside Buchecha, Cidinho e Doca, Funk Orquestra, MC Carol and Tati Quebra Barraco.

“I'm happy to know that kids will turn on the TV and watch funk on stage, a sound that was born and grew up in the community's alleys, as well as seeing a black singer occupying a place that usually only has foreign artists and that the favela it doesn’t reach”, declared the voice of “Tá OK” and “Ela É Do Tipo”.

Despite being scheduled for a smaller stage than the popular Mundo and Sunset, Kevin celebrated the achievement of being at the festival and spoke about the importance of representation and having a rhythm that came from the favelas at Rock in Rio

“I carry the flag of Rio funk with great pride, regardless of where I play, whether at a smaller event or on a big stage, because I know the representation I carry. It's not easy to get to this place that, thank God, I occupy today. I had to go through many challenges, but it is achievements like this that make my entire journey worth it,” he declared.

“People still have a lot of prejudice against our work, but little by little we are showing that funk is more than just music, it is a movement, an expression of our reality, our struggle and our joy. It is the voice and art of the peripheries that, for so long, have been marginalized and silenced. Having a space just for funk at Rock In Rio is just the beginning. Let’s dominate everything, forget it!”, he concluded.
