Court of New York ruled that the American actor Kevin Spacey not sexually harassed 36 years ago his colleague Anthony Rapp, as the latter accused him. The jury rejected claims by Anthony Rapp, who was seeking $40 million in damages.
This particular case came to light in late October 2017, at the beginning of the #MeToo movement with the flurry of revelations about sexual assaults in the entertainment industry. Other allegations against Kevin Spacey followed, with the result that the Hollywood star was put on the sidelines.
A 12-member jury ruled Thursday (10/20) that there was no evidence to support Anthony Rapp’s claim that Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted him in May 1986 at a party at his New York apartment. Anthony Rapp was only 14 at the time, while Kevin Spacey was 26.
Spacey’s lawyer, Jennifer Keller, stressed during her final arguments that Rapp’s story was fabricated. She developed various theories as to why Rapp may have invented it, such as being jealous of her client’s success or wanting to attract the limelight. “Mr. Rapp has attracted more attention in this trial than in his entire acting career”Keller argued.
Kevin Spacey, who is also facing sexual assault charges in the UK, lost his starring role in the popular TV series “House of Cards” and was ordered to pay $31 million in damages to the producers for lost profits.
