Actor Kevin Spacey will have to pay almost $31 million to Media Rights Capital (MRC), the production company behind “House of Cards”, as a judge in the United States ruled. The actor starred in the Netflix series for five seasons before being fired in 2017.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mel Red Recana delivered the ruling earlier this week, upholding a sentence that had been decided by an arbitrator last year. THE CNN obtained court documents.
Spacey and production company MRC have struggled in recent years since the actor was fired from the production for allegations of misconduct on and off set.
Kevin Spacey starred as Frank Underwood on the Emmy-winning show, and MRC claims that having to cut him from the show’s sixth season cost him millions of dollars and “held him (and his affiliated entities) liable.”
Spacey was fired from the TV show the day after the CNN published its report in 2017, where several current and former members of the “House of Cards” production team came forward with allegations of sexual harassment. One person also accused Spacey, then an executive producer of the series, of sexual assault.
Shortly before the report of CNN actor Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed News that the actor made a sexual assault on him at a party in 1986 when he was 14 years old.
MRC says it halted production “to address any concerns of the show’s cast and crew” following the allegations, according to a 2021 document previously reported by MRC. CNN .
Following Rapp’s allegations, Spacey released a statement claiming he had no memory of the incident and apologized for what he said was “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior”.
