Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei denied in statements on Sunday that militant groups in the wider region are acting as Tehran’s proxies. “The Americans keep saying that the Islamic Republic has lost its proxy forces in the region. This is another mistake,” Iran’s leader said, adding: “If one day we want to take action, we don’t need a proxy force.” “The Iranian nation will trample under its mighty feet anyone who accepts America’s mercenary role in this matter,” he said. Khamenei predicted “the emergence of a strong, honest group” in Syria, saying the country’s young men have “nothing to lose.” “His university, school, home, street and life are unsafe – what should he do? He must stand with strength and determination against those who designed this insecurity and those who implemented it, and if God wills, he will overcome them.”
