Kherson no longer has armed resistance against Russian forces, says mayor

The mayor of Ukrainian city Kherson, Ihor Kolykhaiev, told CNN who “have no more weapons to resist” the Russian forces that have besieged the region.

“The people of Kherson are unarmed. We no longer have weapons to resist, to resist armed,” he told CNN’s John Berman.

“We have no army in the city. The army was defeated. The Ukrainian army had to retreat, so there are no weapons. They retreated towards Nikolaev,” he continued.

Kolykhaiev said Russian troops will remain in control of Kherson unless and “until the Ukrainian army can advance on Kherson”, adding that Russian forces “are well established here”. “Russian troops are everywhere,” he says.

The mayor told Berman that life goes on, but all city services are down.

“Normal services have stopped because normal services can’t work,” he said.

He also made an appeal for humanitarian assistance, saying that “production, essential infrastructure has been suspended. The city has no power and no water.”

Kolykhaiev also said that there is no way to bring help to the city because the only way to get help is via Crimea, on the Russian side.

“So the Russians want to send humanitarian aid, but the people of Kherson are refusing. Because they are patriots and they don’t want help from the Russians. They want help from the Ukrainians. Therefore, we are not receiving humanitarian aid at the moment,” she pointed out.

“We have a lot of people here in need,” he said. “We have cancer patients, children who need medication. This medicine is not reaching them right now.”

Kherson is a strategically important town on a Black Sea inlet with a population of nearly 300,000.
