Kherson, Russian-occupied region, closes borders with Ukrainian territory

The Russian-occupied Kherson region has closed its borders to neighboring Ukrainian areas, Russian state media RIA-Novosti reported on Saturday, citing Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the Russian administration installed there.

“The border is now closed for security reasons… we do not advise traveling to Ukraine, regardless of the pretext,” Stremousov said.

Kherson’s border crossings with the Ukrainian regions of Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk are closed, while Kherson’s travel to Crimea or the Russian-controlled areas of Zaporizhzhia remains possible, Stremousov added.

Almost the entire Kherson region – located in southern Ukraine – was occupied by Russia right at the beginning of the Russian invasion at the end of February.

Exit points from the region have been blocked off for weeks, according to Ukrainian officials, who claim that anyone who wanted to leave the area was sent to Crimea.

THE CNN spoke at length with dozens of Ukrainian families about their difficult journeys in and out of the region.

Efforts by the Russian-installed government in Kherson to set up military bases and hold a referendum to make the region a “Republic” – mirroring other breakaway states in eastern Ukraine – are under way.
