Kia overtook Ford, Mitsubishi and parent company Hyundai, placing the brand third in the Australian new car sales rankings in May 2021.
Kia managed to overtake Ford for the first time, with the company overtaking Hyundai for the third time and finishing in third place for the second time. Notably, Kia also overtook Ford in terms of sales in the first five months of the year.
Kia reported a record 7,124 vehicles sold in May 2021, up 158% from last year. The car market in May grew by 67.5% compared to the same period a year earlier. Kia sales in 2014 accounted for only 28% of Hyundai’s Australian sales. Kia’s sales are 96% of Hyundai’s current sales this year. Kia’s sales have more than doubled in the past seven years.
The shortage of components has already affected Kia. For example, the waiting times for the Kia Picanto and Kia Cerato have been extended by at least one month, while the Kia Rio, Kia Stonic, Kia Seltos, Kia Sportage and Kia Stinger are delayed by another three months. Some versions of the Kia Sorento SUV, such as the full-fledged GT-Line, are delayed for up to six months.
