Kiev: Guards fire warning shots as Ukrainians try to squeeze on trains to Lviv

Ukrainian guards fired warning shots to prevent a kick-off at Kiev’s main train station today as thousands of people tried to board evacuation trains.

The crowd was so large that not everyone could get on the trains to the capital, Lviv, in the western part of the country, as fears of a Russian attack on Kiev intensified.

As a train approached the platform, the crowd rushed to the door, hoping to board, some of them holding their children and pets. The guards fired several shots at the crowd to disperse the crowd, after which some people started screaming.

Maria, 30, gave up trying to leave after spending four hours at the station with her child, her husband and their dog.

“You can see it is dangerous to walk through the crowd with a child. The dog is scared. Honestly, we are exhausted,” he told Reuters.

Some foreign students also tried to leave. A girl from Mongolia described from the station that she and her classmates were offered the opportunity to leave for their homelands if they managed to reach Poland, which borders western Ukraine.

When Ukrainian soldiers showed up at the station, people started applauding and shouting “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!”.

“I’m not afraid of anything,” said Irina, a 35 – year – old woman who also failed to board the train. “We support the truth and if we support the truth, God is on our side. I am ready to stay in Kiev if necessary and offer moral support to our army.”

Many others chose to leave in their cars, resulting in traffic jams on the streets outside the capital for a second day.
