Kiev is hit by new Russian attacks and air defenses are activated in Lviv

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a statement that the Ukrainian capital “was attacked” on Saturday morning.

“The explosions took place in the Darnytsky district on the outskirts of the city,” he said. “Rescuers and doctors are working at the scene. Information about the victims is being clarified.”

Some residents began returning to Kiev after the failure of a Russian offensive launched from northern Ukraine. Klitschko urged residents of the capital to reconsider returning for the time being, saying: “I ask that you refrain from this and stay in safer places.”

Maksym Kozytskyy, military governor of the Lviv region of western Ukraine, said Saturday that “air defenses were active” during an air raid alarm that started at 5:46 am local time and lasted more than an hour.

Local officials said two civilians had died and four others were injured across the country after Russian attacks on Saturday. One of the deaths was recorded in the Luhansk region, hit by shelling, and the other in Poltava, in central Ukraine.
