Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko is urging people to stay indoors between Sunday (8) and Monday (9) because of Russia’s Victory Day, the annual commemoration of the country that is in conflict with Ukraine.
Western officials have warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin could formally declare war on Ukraine on May 9, a symbolic day for Russia, paving the way for Putin to step up his campaign. The Kremlin rejected speculation about the declaration of war.
Klitschko is imposing a curfew in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday and Monday, and events will not be held, according to his social media posts.
He informed that there will be reinforcement of patrols in the city.
“If someone wants to plant flowers, they can do it in private… Pay attention and follow the safety rules in time of war,” Klitschko said.
“I also ask that you do not ignore the aerial alarm signals and protect yourself immediately. In the coming days, there is a high probability of missile bombings in all regions of Ukraine. Stay tuned and take care of your own safety”, warned the mayor.
