Kiev mayor says city is surrounded by areas of heavy fighting

Kiev’s regional administration says there are several routes beyond the Ukrainian capital that are dangerous because of intense fighting, including on the main road west of Zhytomyr and the city of Makariv. The city council said areas to the north remained among the riskiest, including the suburbs of the cities of Bucha, Irpin and Gostomel, as well as the district of Vyshorod, further north of the capital.

Settlements around Brovary, which is across the Dnieper River to the east of the capital, have also come under attack, the city administration said.

“Evacuation through humanitarian corridors from Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel and Borodianka is planned today,” the government said, after limited success in evacuating civilians from these areas on Wednesday.

Separately, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared on Ukrainian television that “the main objective of the Russians is to capture Kiev”. “Their task since the first day of the war is to encircle Kiev, encircle it and then continue attacking, overthrowing the government,” said the city administrator.

“Their plans are not being carried out, thanks to our men who are now in Bucha, Vorzel, Irpin, Hostomel, where fierce fighting is taking place. Our men are thwarting all plans to encircle Kiev,” Klitschko said.

He also spoke about refugees leaving the capital. “One in two Kiev residents leave the city. There are just under two million inhabitants now in Kiev,” said the mayor.

“Now Kiev has become a fortress, every street and every building,” he said.

Russian convoy around Kiev has made little progress

The UK Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the Russian convoy northwest of Kiev had made little progress in more than a week and was suffering continued losses.

As casualties mount, Russian President Vladimir Putin will be forced to turn to the military and other sources to replace losses, the British ministry added in a statement.

As troops try to reach the capital, one of the places that suffers most from attacks attributed to Russian troops is the southern port city of the country, Mariupol. City officials say Russian forces have begun dropping bombs in a region called the “green corridor” designed to evacuate residents of the city.

“Right now, the aerial bombardment of Mariupol is underway,” said Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol.

The city representative further stated that the air strikes were being carried out to destroy road infrastructure and completely isolate the city.

On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had advanced in several districts around Mariupol. But so far, there are no statements on the Ukrainian allegation of attacks against the city.
