Ukraine’s infrastructure minister, who signed the deal earlier today on behalf of Kiev to resume grain exports from Ukrainian ports, said the deal was only made possible thanks to his country’s military successes.
In televised remarks, Infrastructure Minister Alexander Kubrakov referred to the recapture of Fidonisi, a small but strategically important islet located near several major Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea. Recapturing the island, he said, was an “important moment”.
Kubrakov also said that Ukraine saw no danger of Russian ships reaching Ukrainian ports through the safe corridors set out in the agreement as, in such a case, they would face Ukrainian missiles, he said.
For his part, Ukraine’s intelligence chief Kirill Budanov told television that Ukraine’s coasts are protected by missile systems and that Russia tried but failed to pass several “unacceptable” terms in the grain export agreement.
“Russia really wanted to escort grain convoys with warships, wanted to do inspections on Ukrainian territory and so on,” Budanov said. “But none of these requests will be implemented. And Russia finally agreed,” he added.
