Kiev to remove sculpture celebrating Ukrainian-Russian friendship, mayor says

Workers will dismantle a Soviet-era sculpture in central Kiev that commemorates the “friendship” between Russians and Ukrainians, the city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Monday.

“This week we are going to dismantle a bronze sculpture of two workers, erected in 1982 ‘to commemorate the reunification of Ukraine with Russia'”, Klitschko said. Kiev,” he added.

A rainbow-shaped titanium arch that spans the top of the monument — originally called the People’s Friendship Arch — will remain, but will be renamed and highlighted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, according to the mayor.

Surprise visit by US government officials

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin paid a “surprise visit” to Kiev on Sunday, where they met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to Blinken, US diplomats will return to Ukraine this week. Also discussed were deliveries of US military assistance to the country, training for Ukrainian soldiers and additional military funding for NATO-capable systems.
