Businesswoman Kim Kardashian, 43, wrote a letter asking for the release of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty, in the family home in Beverly Hills, with 12 shots, in 1989.
In the text published on the NBC News website on Thursday (3), the American socialite points out flaws in the duo’s judgment and says that society was not ready to welcome victims of sexual abuse in the 1980s. She revealed that she met the Menendez brothers and mentioned the journey they took inside the prison.
“They are not monsters. They are kind, intelligent and honest men. In prison, both have an exemplary disciplinary record, have earned several university degrees, worked as caregivers for elderly inmates, and have been mentors in university programs,” he said. Kim.
For her, the Menendez brothers were victims of the environment in which they grew up and the murder of their parents was the last resort of a duo who suffered from a routine of abuse for several years.
“According to Lyle, the abuse began when he was just six years old. Erik said he was raped by his father for more than a decade. After years of abuse and real fear for their lives, Erik and Lyle chose what they thought at the time was their only way out: an unimaginable way to escape their nightmare,” Kim wrote.
The businesswoman criticizes the fact that much evidence of the abuse suffered by the brothers was invalidated in the trial, which contributed to the sentence being imposed much higher than what she believes they should have received.
“The prosecutor, having successfully argued to exclude the abuse testimony, mocked the brothers’ defense during their closing arguments for not presenting any evidence of abuse,” he quotes.
“Resources for victims of sexual abuse were limited, especially for boys. Can anyone sincerely deny that the courts would have treated the Menendez sisters more leniently?”, he argues.
The case of the Menendez brothers gained repercussions again after the release of the second season of the Netflix series “Monsters”, which tells the story of the duo. The production created by Ryan Murphy debuted on the streaming platform on September 21st and was the most watched series in the world there in the week from the 23rd to the 30th.
