KINAL ladder in Northern Evia: No to the government’s rhetoric about the fire-affected areas

In the areas affected by the catastrophic fire of last August in Northern Evia, a new branch of the Movement for Change was found, consisting of Mrs. Tonia Antoniou, Member of Parliament for the Southern Sector of Athens and in charge of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Mr. Ch. Of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. George Apostolopoulos, Secretary of the Department of Environment and Mr. Grigoris Skiadopoulos, Secretary of the Department of Civil Protection.

The Movement for Change had committed from its first step visit to Northern Evia, led by the late President Fofi Gennimata, when the fire was still raging, to systematically control the Government, both for the necessary actions of immediate relief and for the victims. reconstruction actions of the wider area.

The group met with the Mayors of Istiaia-Edipsos and Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna, Mr. G. Kontzia and Mr. G. Tsapournioti, Municipal Councilors, the Edipsos Port Authority Mr. S. Danikas, the Business Coordinator of Greece Of Thessaly, Mr. D. Karasavidis, the Commander of P.Y. Of Evia. Mr. P. Koukouvini, the Commander of the Istiaia Police Department, Mr. K. Maragiannis, as well as with citizens from the wider area, in order to be informed about the support of the people who are being tested, as well as about the procedures for repairing the damage.

The meetings revealed that there are serious shortcomings, delays and serious exclusions, in terms of compensation and issues of immediate relief of the victims. More specifically:

– The amount of compensation for the classified as repairable (“yellow”) houses is only 180 euros per sq.m. and not 500 euros, as in Mati and Kinetta.

– For the flood victims of October 2021 no compensation is provided in the case of houses that are a second home. There is also no compensation for burnt olive trees belonging to non-professional farmers, while there are exclusions for most fig growers, as they joined the compensations of individual companies based on the drop in turnover in the quarter July-August – September.

– Owners in Agia Anna face major obstacles to the restoration of their homes that had been legalized by previous legislation.

– The transfers of the students affected by the fire show an unjustified delay.

– A key issue that needs a change in the institutional framework is the exclusion of the individuals of the Forced Forest Cooperatives of northern Evia from the forest restoration works.

– It is an urgent need to create a department of EKAB in the Municipality of Mantoudi – Lake – Ag. Annas, for which space has been secured and designed and there is a relative commitment of the prime minister.

– It is necessary to speed up the construction processes of flood protection works, because the problem of floods can arise at any time.

– The construction of a new Road Connection of Northern Evia – from Istiaia – to Chalkida, must proceed immediately.

At the same time, in the meetings, intense concern was expressed about the rehabilitation and development model that has been chosen, in which the local government and the local professional and productive bodies do not participate, while it was particularly emphasized that substantial incentives are needed for the necessary investments.

The Movement for Change will not allow the traditional rhythm of the State to prevail, when the spotlight leaves the point of crisis.

That is why we will highlight the issues raised by the citizens and the institutions, both through the parliamentary control and through our direct contacts with the competent bodies in the coming days.

Finally, we will seek the consultation of the competent Government bodies with the Municipalities and the local bodies not to be pretentious, but regular and continuous. It is necessary to establish a system of transparency-continuous accountability for the actions of the Special Committee for the Reconstruction of Northern Evia and all the involved authorities.
