KINAL: The decisions of the government meeting on fan violence are insufficient

The Movement for Change accuses the government of downplaying the murder of the 19-year-old in Thessaloniki in another incident of fan violence, noting that it treats the issue as purely “sporting” with criminal implications.

In particular, in a joint statement, G. Kaminis, KTE of Citizen Protection and M. Skandamis, Head of Citizen Protection, state:

“A week after the brutal murder of Alkis Kampanos, the rapid investigation of the crime and the arrest of all the perpetrators is imperative. An encouraging development is the issuance of 10 arrest warrants and the arrest of 8 new suspects by the Greek Police. At the same time, the Greek Police and the Justice They must initiate all the necessary procedures, in order to extradite to Greece the suspect who allegedly escaped to Albania, but also to arrest all those who are considered suspects.

But the State can not stop there. From the first moment that the brutal murder became known, PASOK – Movement for Change has pointed out that sectarian violence has evolved into an organized crime with a stable structure, duration in time and goal of committing crimes, including homicides. Every citizen, fan or not, is in danger of losing his life or falling victim to the action of these criminal circuits.

We have called on the Ministry of Civil Protection to upgrade its planning in this direction. Our assessment is fully confirmed by the circular of the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court to the Prosecutors of First Instance and Appellate of the country, issued on Friday and puts the issue in its proper dimension. We are not just dealing with some “violent hooligans” but with a system of brutal criminal criminals who recruit, direct and kill young members. Unfortunately, in today’s meeting under the Prime Minister, with the participation of the Ministers of Citizen Protection and Justice and the Deputy Minister of Sports, the government intervention appeared in complete discrepancy with this reality. It downgrades the murder to another incident of fan violence. In other words, the government treats the issue as purely “sporting” with criminal implications.

We point this out once again: It is primarily an organized crime that has infiltrated the field of sports as well. The tragic reason for the assassination of Alkis Kampanos can be the trigger for the State to deal a major blow to criminal organizations that use the “fan” mantle to expand their activities, often not driven by far-right or even neo-Nazi ideas. We call on the government to rise to the occasion. ”
