The countdown to coronation of King Charles at at Westminster Abbey at London on the 6th of May it has already begun and details of the magnificent ceremony have already been made known, with traditions dating back 1,000 years but also… novelties.
For example, the royal couple will be transported from Buckingham to the Abbey in a state-of-the-art carriage with… air conditioning, electric windows and special shock absorbers.
According to Sally Goodcher, curator of the royal collection: “This is the first time this carriage has been used at a coronation. It was presented to Queen Elizabeth in 2014 and used to start the parliamentary term that year.” The name of the coach is Diamond Jubilee State Coach.
The event, however, will have some differences from Queen Elizabeth’s in 1953, mainly in terms of scale, partly reflecting the modern era and the current cost of living crisis.
According to the BBC, the route that the royal couple will follow is shorter than that of Queen Elizabeth, 70 years ago. From the palace to Trafalgar Square and then around Parliament Square to end up at the west entrance of the Abbey for the coronation.
King Charles will be enthroned with the 2.5kg St Edward’s Crown. He will wear the ring with the cross of St. George, and in the procession that follows he will hold a scepter and orb representing religious authority.
With the crown of Mary of Teck, wife of King George V, Camilla will be enthroned, in a ceremony where only 2000 people have been invited.
After the ceremony, the couple will return in the 260-year-old golden state carriage, which has been used at every coronation since William IV’s in 1831. It was first used by George III to travel to the state opening of Parliament in 1762, when he was still king of Britain’s American colonies.
With a length of 7 meters, a height of 3.6 meters and a weight of four tons, it takes eight horses to pull it. Finally, a new emoji has been designed to mark the coronation celebrations for social media.
