King Charles III will send two historic items, including an 18th century stand clock, for restoration during a special episode of the BBC television show “The Repair Shop”.
The monarch’s TV appearance is part of the broadcaster’s 100th anniversary celebrations and will see him join show host Jay Blades and his team of expert artisans in their mission to preserve the heritage’s artisan skills, the BBC said in a statement. press release.
The episode was filmed between autumn 2021 and March of this year, before Charles became monarch following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
“The Repair Shop” features a team of artisans who restore items that their owners thought could not be salvaged.
On the show, Charles invites Blades and his team, including a ceramics expert, watchmaker and furniture restorer, to Dumfries House in Scotland. They are tasked with restoring an 18th century stand clock and Wemyss Ware pottery made for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
During the episode, “The Repair Shop” team takes a tour of the property and meets the next generation of artisans who learn traditional skills such as blacksmithing, masonry and wood carving thanks to the Príncipe Foundation Crafts Program.
In the spring of this year, Charles met with his items.
Reflecting on his time with royalty, Blades, from Hackney, London, said in the statement: “You have someone from a council estate and someone from a royal estate who have the same interests in learning and crafts and it is unbelievable to see that two people so far apart, from different ends of the spectrum, actually have the same interests.”
BBC commissioning editor Julie Shaw described the upcoming episode as “a real treat”.
“People will see the former Prince of Wales as you rarely see him — and he’s just as captivated by the skills of the team working on his items as any of our ‘Repair Shop’ visitors,” added Shaw.
King Charles is no stranger to the small screen.
In 2000, he made a pre-recorded appearance on the 40th anniversary episode of the ITV soap “Coronation Street”. Playing himself, Charles visited the show’s fictional Manchester neighborhood and met with councilor Audrey Roberts, played by actress Sue Nicholls.
He also made a cameo appearance on the ITV reality show “Keeping up with the Aristocrats” where he was filmed participating in the agricultural event The Great Yorkshire Show in 2021.
“The Repair Shop” airs October 26 at 8pm (local time) on BBC One.
