King Charles III vows to follow his mother’s example in 1st speech to Parliament

King Charles III told Parliament on Monday that he was “resolved to follow faithfully” the example of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, addressing lawmakers and colleagues in what he described as “the instrument living and breathing space of our democracy”.

“She set an example of selfless duty which, with God’s help and his advice, I am resolved to faithfully follow,” said the new monarch.

“As Shakespeare says of the former Queen Elizabeth, she was ‘a standard for all princes alive’.”

The queen died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday, triggering a period of national mourning as tens of thousands of Britons must pay tribute to her.

Early in the morning, Charles III will go to Westminster Hall in London, where the Houses of Parliament will pay their respects.

At 12:45 pm local time (8:45 am GMT), together with his wife, Queen consort Camilla Parker Bowles, the king is scheduled to arrive in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. They will move to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where the queen’s body is.

From 14:35 (10:35 GMT), the coffin will go to St Giles Cathedral. A prayer will be held with the presence of the royal family.

There will still be a “state wake”, which will last 24 hours. On the occasion, the population of Scotland will be able to say goodbye to royalty.

Afterwards, Charles III will return to Holyroodhouse to have an audience with Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon and a meeting with the Speaker of the Scottish Parliament. Afterwards, he will go to the legislative house to receive honors.
