King Charles returns to work for the first time after cancer diagnosis

King Charles III has been seen back at work for the first time since revealing his cancer diagnosis. The monarch was filmed shaking hands with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at Buckingham Palace this Wednesday (21).

The meeting marked the resumption of weekly meetings between the two to discuss government matters.

Although the king has stopped holding public engagements while undergoing cancer treatment, he continues his routine duties as head of state.

“We are all supporting you. The whole country is behind you,” Sunak said, according to the PA news agency.

Charles replied: “I have received so many wonderful messages and cards. It reduced me to tears most of the time.”

According to the British agency, the two continued to discuss how the king's illness had affected cancer charities, with the king describing these organizations as “wonderful”.

Before meeting with the Prime Minister, Charles held a Privy Council at the royal residence, which was attended by ministers, including Council President Penny Mordaunt.

Remember the diagnosis

On February 6, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer and would step back from public duties while he underwent treatment.

The disease was identified after the monarch was admitted to a London hospital for a procedure to correct an enlarged prostate last month. Prostate cancer was ruled out to CNN by a royal source, who did not provide further details.

The expectation is that Charles will continue to receive correspondence with government documents so that he can continue to work from home. Prince William, son of Charles and heir to the throne, and Queen Camilla must assume public commitments.
