King Charles: Three days of celebrations in Britain for his coronation

Buckingham has released details of his three-day coronation program King Charles III. The ceremony will take place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey, followed by concerts, memorial lighting and initiatives to promote volunteering over the next 48 hours.

Charles, 74, will be formally crowned king eight months after the death of his mother, who died on September 8 aged 96. The intervening period has allowed both the observance of mourning in memory of Queen Elizabeth II and the organization of the ceremony.

Buckingham is aiming for a glittering ceremony and an equally spectacular celebration, given the historic significance attached to the coronation of the new monarch.

But will the royal family be reunited? Buckingham Palace has not yet clarified whether Harry and his wife Meghan will attend the ceremony. There has been little to no backlash over Prince Harry’s revealing book ‘Reserve’, which was released on January 10, with inside scoop on members of the royal family.

Elizabeth II’s three-hour coronation ceremony on June 2, 1953 was grand, attended by 8,251 dignitaries at Westminster Abbey. It was watched on television by 27 million Britons – out of a total population of 36 million at the time.

The coronation of Charles and Camilla

Charles III’s coronation ceremony will take place on the morning of May 6 at Westminster Abbey – as has his predecessors for 900 years – presided over by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the head of the Anglican Church.

The royal wife Camilla will also wear a crownit has been reported, but no further details have been released.

Charles III and Camilla to arrive at Westminster Abbey in royal procession and after the coronation ceremony is over they will return to the palace to greet the crowd from the balcony.

Concert at Windsor Castle

On Sunday, a concert has been organized at Windsor Castle, in west London, with the participation of stars of the world music scene. The concert will be televised by the BBC. Buckingham Palace has not released the names of the artists who will be performing.

Later in the evening, emblematic monuments throughout the city will be illuminated Britain and outdoor festivities will be held at various locations.

The celebration will resemble that of June for the “Platinum Jubilee” of Queen Elizabeth II (including the completion of 70 years on the British throne).

Monday will be a public holiday for the British and Buckingham Palace encourage citizens to participate in charity initiatives to promote volunteering.
