Spain’s King Emeritus Juan Carlos I arrived in the country’s northwest on Thursday night on his first visit since leaving Spain nearly two years ago, while he was under investigation for his financial dealings.
A plane carrying Juan Carlos from Abu Dhabi, where he lives, landed at Vigo airport at around 7:15 pm local time, CNN the press office of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo.
The king emeritus was received at the airport by his eldest daughter, Infanta Elena, and a friend, Pedro Campos, who is president of the yacht club where Juan Carlos is due to participate in a nautical event this weekend, the press office said.
The coastal town of Sanxenxo is around a 40-minute drive from Vigo Airport. Campos told Spanish media on Thursday that he would welcome the former king to his home this weekend.
The Spanish Royal House’s press office declined to comment on the former king’s arrival in Vigo, saying it was a “private matter”.
