Kioxia begins construction of largest flash memory factory

Kioxia held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new semiconductor factory (Fab7) at the Yokkaichi plant in Mie Prefecture, Japan. This facility will become one of the most modern in the world and will be engaged in the production of 3D BiCS FLASH flash memory. The first stage of construction is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2022. The construction of the new facility will be split into two phases to ensure continuous production and shipment of flash memory to meet current demand.

In a press release to kick off construction, the Fab7 will be earthquake-resistant and environmentally friendly, incorporating the latest in energy-efficient manufacturing equipment. It will be the largest flash memory facility in the world. The manufacturer notes that it intends to increase the productivity of its facilities by introducing an advanced control system that uses artificial intelligence.

It remains to add that Western Digital is involved in the project, having inherited a partnership with Kioxia with the takeover of SanDisk.
