Kioxia announced the start of construction of a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility (Fab2) at its Kitakami plant in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The new capacities will expand the production of BiCS FLASH 3D Flash memory. The construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in April 2022, and it should be completed in 2023.
According to Kioxia, the Fab2 lines will use advanced manufacturing technologies that use artificial intelligence. It is expected that AI will also increase the productivity of the entire plant and improve product quality.

The Fab2 facility will have an earthquake-resistant architectural design and an environmentally friendly design that uses state-of-the-art energy efficient manufacturing equipment and renewable energy sources. Kioxia plans to finance the Fab2 capital investment from its operating cash flow.
Kioxia also announced that it plans to hold talks with Western Digital to expand the joint venture through investment in Fab2.
